Loyalists were colonists who remained loyal to the British Crown and opposed American independence.
Loyalists provided financial support, logistical backing and intelligence, and even foreign military units to fight against the Patriots.
It is estimated that almost 20% of the population were loyalists, often referred to as Tories, Royalists or King's Men.
